I did my fair share of being out and about these past two weeks, soaking up the Nick Cave lecture at SMoCA, making a jaunt to First Friday and hitting the Canalscape opening at ASU Art Museum (among other events). So I was thinking I might stick my head in the sand over the weekend. Literally - I wanted to spend my daytime hours hitting some hiking trails.
No such luck. Silly me. There's really too many great things going on for me to pass up. Which is definitely a good problem to have. But I'm still going to sleep in tomorrow and fit in a nice, long hike at some point. Which means I'll probably stop at one of these events in my hiking gear. Is it tacky to show up in spandex, hiking shoes, no make-up and a camelbak?

The Green Streets Festival
Friday, Nov. 13th 6-10 p.m.
You may have noticed a gaggle of people roaming the streets downtown this week. That's because the Greenbuild International Conference & Expo has been lecturing, collaborating and discussing how to, well, stop killing our own planet down at the Phoenix Convention Center. Well, tonight, their celebrating the finale of the conference with their Green Streets Festival. The block party is along Roosevelt Row from 4th to 7th Streets and will feature eco-friendly vendors, Four Peaks Beer Garden and locally-grown munchies made by a handful of the valley's best chefs.
In the Yard
Saturday, Nov. 14th 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
There's a real good reason to just stay on Roosevelt Row this entire weekend. First, Saturday offers a few other Green Streets events you can read about here. But you're also going to want to head to the In the Yard event on the Lawn of Bunky Boutique, 812 N. 3rd St. Local artisans will be selling their D.I.Y. wares, everything at Bunky will be 20% off and the neighboring Roosevelt Tavern will be open for the whole thing. Really, could there be a better Saturday event?
Stylos 2009
Saturday, Nov. 14th, 6-10 p.m.
Okay, so there might be a better event, depending on what you're looking for. Phoenix Art Museum (1625 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix) is hosting Stylos 2009, the 4th annual awards ceremony recognizing local Latino talent. Watch as the best of the best in local art, music, activism and leadership are recognized for their tremendous efforts (congrats to Claudio Dicohea, Annie Lopez, Lalo Cota and Luis Gutierrez
who are all artists of the year). Entertainment includes fashion by LOH, VMarie, Culture Fresh, Lola y Lola, a local dance performance and music by Santa Cecilia.
Spanish Market at the Heard Museum
Saturday & Sunday, Nov. 14th 15th, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
So after you've poked around Roosevelt, take a quick cruise up Central Ave. to the Heard (2301 N. Central Ave) for their outdoor Spanish Market. Here, you'll find book signings by our beloved Crafty Chica and pottery lover Rob Goebel. The cafe is offering Spanish dishes and there will be a whopping 75 artists from AZ and NM selling milagros, santos, pottery, Colcha embroidery, furniture, tinwork, textiles, retablos, jewelry and oh my God get in the car, we're going.
See? What did I tell ya? Too much good stuff to pass up, right?
