MC Magic: One Big Mistake Up-and-Coming Rappers Keep Making (and More)

Lost in love? Stuck in a relationship quagmire Ann Landers wouldn't understand? Trying to figure out what comes next in life and music? We'd like to invite you personally to bring your problems to Ask Magic, your chance to ask Arizona's reigning slow-jam king for advice on whatever life throws at you. Dear Magic,

I've been with my boyfriend for a year, and lately we've been having a lot of problems. He lies to me and goes behind my back talking to other girls. I've told him how I feel about it and he doesn't do anything about it.

What should I do? Ignored in Phoenix

Dear Ignored,

Your story reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, "You don't know what you have until it's gone."

Many people only interpret that saying to mean that what you have is good, and you don't always realize that until you've lost it. But I believe the blade cuts both ways.

What I'm saying is that your relationship is causing you grief and sadness, which is taking the place of your peace and happiness. Now that he's gone, you know he's not worth it. I recommend you cut ties and let go of Mr. Unfaithful -- eventually that will give you the freedom to find a situation that brings you contentment.

Dear Magic,

Hello! <3 I hope all is good. I have a question about love. There's a guy who was my boyfriend for some time. Last weekend he says to me, "Que regresaramos." In this moment I tell him, "No, because I'm not sure what I feel for you!"

He's a good guy, but I don't know what to do. What do you say, Magic?? Unsure in Fort Worth

Dear Unsure,

Everyone can offer you advice, but only you know your feelings.

That's my rule of thumb: Always trust your gut feeling. Only you know whether that man's going to take you back to a good or bad place. If you ended on a good note, and your excitement overshadows your doubt, then reuniting may be great for you. But if you're not sure, make sure you know why you aren't sure.

In short -- sit yourself down, take a look at your feelings, and make the decision.

Blessings! MC Magic

Dear Magic,

You run your own label, so I was wondering if you have any advice for people who are trying to get attention from fans and from people like you. Like, what do up and coming musicians do that impresses you the most?

Also, is there anything other bands do that makes you worry about signing them, like a warning sign?

Thanks, Getting Started in Tempe

Dear Getting Started,

Being successful in music today is actually a lot easier than it used to be in the past. Fans and music-lovers are constantly scouring YouTube in search of hidden treasures. Making good music is the key -- of course, everyone has a different definition of "good," but you have to trust that there is always an audience out there for "good" music.

One mistake I often hear from up-and-coming rappers is that they want to say the exact same things Lil Wayne and Drake are saying -- boasting about how they're making it rain, runnin' through lots of females, and living the life of a millionaire.

Truth is, most people are intelligent enough to know who really has millions and who's just rapping wishfully. Create your own lane, your movement, and good music, and then watch your internet buzz grow to unimaginable proportions.

That's exactly what I look for when we're looking to bring new talent on board at Nastyboy Records.

Blessings, MC Magic
