Over the Weekend: Volcano Choir, Yellowcard, Treasure Mammal, and Planet of the Drums

So, how was your weekend? Perhaps you got all up in the club, got in as much revelry as possible, or got yourself into one of the big concerts going on around town. Then again, maybe you just sat around killing time before the big NFC or AFC championship games came on the tube.

Meanwhile, the Up on the Sun staff spent the past several nights hitting up shows like Treasure Mammal's wild gig at Trunk Space on Thursday, Volcano Choir's intimate performance at the Crescent Ballroom the next night, Yellowcard's celebration of the 10th anniversary of Ocean Avenue over at the Nile in Mesa on Saturday, and elsewhere. Treasure Mammal - The Trunk Space - 1/16/14 Treasure Mammal is one of those bands that you have to see live to fully understand. Words can only go so far to describe the performance art, interpretive dance, and random nods to pop culture that make up a Treasure Mammal show. This is the type of band you want to say represents the Phoenix music scene half in anticipation of a reaction, and half because it's fitting.

Shows at small venues like The Trunk Space, Last Exit Live, Meat Market Vintage, etc. do represent Phoenix culture, especially when a band as eclectic as Treasure Mammal takes the stage. Volcano Choir at Crescent Ballroom, 1/17/14 Volcano Choir gave Phoenix a bit of a treat last night -- the first stop on the band's short West Coast tour. Their Crescent Ballroom concert on Friday night was sold out well ahead of time and could have very well been moved to a larger venue. Thankfully, it wasn't moved.

The intimate setting was perfect for the experimental, folksy, and post-rock sounds of Volcano Choir, and the highly anticipated show exceeded expectations of fans and anyone crossing their fingers for a Bon Iver song....Read the full review of Volcano Choir's show.

Yellowcard - Nile Theater - 1/18/14 (VIDEO) Attending Yellowcard's show on Saturday night at the Nile made me realize just how old I'm getting -- and I was one of the youngest people there. Along with a crowd of 20-somethings, 30-somethings, and a few teens, I was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Yellowcard's landmark Ocean Avenue album, which -- like many -- I listened to after it first dropped in 2003. So you can bet this was a bit of a nostalgia trip for me and many others in attendance.

Yellowcard played through Ocean Avenue in its entirety during a completely acoustic set, keeping the crowd pretty mellowed out. Planet of the Drums at Monarch Theatre, 1/18/14 The air inside the Monarch Theatre was heavy with an of pounding beats on Saturday, January 18, as the EDM superstars of the Planet of the Drums tour unleashed an unending onslaught of drum ‘n’ bass upon a packed house. As MC Messinian spat rhymes and worked the mic as a hype man, d’n’b DJs like Dieselboy, AK1200, and Dara tag-teamed the mixers and conjured a maelstrom of lightning-fast rhythms and kinky bass warbles to keep the crowd moving all night...See the full Planet of the Drum slideshow.
