It's been said that January is the worst month because of post-holiday depression, having to stick to all those pesky resolutions, or your ass getting dumped. But if anyone was feeling blue during the first month of 2014, they weren't showing their frowny faces at any of the bars, music venues, or dance joints that the Club Candids crew hit up the last four weeks.
That's because there was nothing but big grins and such when we asked clubgoers and night rangers to pose for pictures while hitting up such locations as the Monarch Theatre, El Hefe on Mill Avenue, and Long Wong's in Tempe. Some people mugged or clowned for our camera, while others merely just smiled. See for yourself as we look back at the best Club Candids shots of January 2014.
DJ Roya's Magical Unicorn & Rainbow Birthday Party at Apollo's Lounge
Tongue Tied's Michele "DJ Roya" Chinichian celebrated her birthday on Saturday, January 4, at Apollo's Lounge with a magically delicious evening of rainbows, unicorns, stickers, face painting, balloons, and enough bright colors to make Lisa Frank (not to mention your average suburban moppet) jealous. Plus, Dave Driscoll Dance Machine entertained with his funky moves and revealing neon spandex while DJs like Chinichian and Funkfinger spun indie hits and throwbacks from the '80s and '90s.
Live Music at Long Wong's in Tempe
The East Valley's live music scene is plenty vibrant, a fact evidenced by the equally vivid scene of music and art found at Long Wong's on Apache Boulevard. Club Candids, for instance, hung out at the Tempe bar on both Monday, January 13, and Tuesday, January 14, at witnessed some burgeoning local bands do their thing amidst the colorful art that lined the walls.
4-2-10 Sundays at El Hefe in Tempe
If you ever pay a visit to the newest El Hefe in Tempe on a weekend night, you're guaranteed to see any combination of the following: the sexy bartending chicas sashaying up on the bar, bottles being tipped straight into patron's mouths, and a whole bunch of people having a wild time atop booths or on the dance floor while pulsating EDM gets blasted. And there's also a slew of festive straw sombreros being worn. Club Candids witnessed such scenes when we hit up El Hefe on Sunday, January 19.
Whiteout 6 at the Monarch Theatre
EDM fans flocked to Monarch Theatre, many dressed in all-white outfits, on Saturday, January 25, to watch DJs Alvin Risk, Klaypex, LOUDPVCK, and others grind away on the mixers while getting busy on the dance floor and working up a major sweat.
