It ain't no party about off-the-wall statements by Arizona politicians unless Governor Jan's invited.
Last week we took a look at some of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's most puzzling moments of 2012 (so far).
Given the infamous embarrassing moments the Guv has did have -- such as the brain-fart of the century -- let's recap the best so far in 2012:
5. Brewer Tries to Get More People to Like Her
Not only did Jan Brewer take to social media to solicit votes for Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People list, but she did so a tad bit late. On April 6, 2012 she sent out a notice on Facebook asking people to vote for her to be included on the list. Brewer said voting for her would help push back against the liberal media, which she claims levied a barrage of attacks against her for being included in Time's s pool of nominees. Unfortunately, the last day to cast votes for the polls was April 6, 2012, and she missed the cut.
4. Expresses Thoughts on Obama Administration's New Immigration Policy: Protect the Border! Protect the Border! Protect the Border!
When it comes to President Obama's recent passing of his modified version of the Dream Act, Brewer is sure of one thing: "We need to secure our borders." She made this point quite clear during her June 15 press conference, in which she slammed the provision as "back door amnesty" and "political pandering" on the part of Obama during an election year. Brewer repeatedly responded to questions about specific aspects of the act by reaffirming her very general point that the borders need to be secured.
3. Prematurely Celebrates SB 1070 Ruling
Apparently someone forgot to tell Brewer that the recent Supreme Court ruling on SB 1070 was not really a victory for the law's proponents. She called the decision a "victory for the 10th Amendment and all Americans who believe in the inherent right and responsibility of states to defend their citizens." Meanwhile, the ruling knocked down three out of four of the law's tested provisions. Her declaration even left Fox News confused as to how she came to that conclusion.
2. Mulls Run for Third Term She Can't Run For
Brewer's hinted at a run for a third consecutive term as Arizona governor that she can't actually run for. The problem is: A governor isn't allowed to serve for more than two consecutive terms. Since she replaced former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano midway through Napolitano's term, Brewer believes she should be eligible to run again. But the state Constitution rather explicitly states that two consecutive terms in office "shall include any part of a term served."
1. Wags Finger in President's Face
There's probably no moment more embarrassing to the state of Arizona this year than when Brewer stuck her finger in the face of the president back in January. Brewer said she wasn't actually pointing her finger in President Obama's gob; she just was firmly reminding him that he only had one more year left in office. Whatever her intention was, it wasn't a great look for Arizona.
