This morning, Mesa police mentioned in a statement to the media that alleged cat mutilator Scott Graham told a "strange story" to investigators in response to the allegations.

Taking a look at court documents filed in the case, we have a pretty good guess as to what that strange story might be.

According to the court documents obtained by New Times, Graham was asked why there was a dead cat smell and apparent blood stains in the trunk of his car.

His response, according to the documents -- "several" cats snuck into his car one night and brawled in the trunk.

Believe it or not, Graham had a hard time coming up with the details of how and when he witnessed cats running a fight club in his trunk.

"The explanation seemed incredible," the probable-cause statement reads.

According to the cops, Graham was caught on a video-surveillance camera taking a cat from the top of the cat-owner's car near Guadalupe Road and Alma School Road about a month ago.

That cat was found a few days later, dead and mutilated behind a nearby strip mall. Another mutilated cat was found there too.

Police spoke with Graham's parents at their house after Graham was accused by a neighbor of taking the cat -- and throwing a cat at him out of his car window -- and they told police their son didn't even own a cat. In fact, the guy being investigated for stealing a whole lot of cats is actually allergic to cats, his parents told police.

Police also found Graham's clothing, gloves, and car floor mats "covered" in cat hair in his garage.

Graham's other story to police was that he "played" with the 30 to 40 cats he abducted, then released them in a different area, according to the cops.

Graham's currently facing a felony animal-abuse charge, as well as a few misdemeanors. His bond was set at $9,800.
