Seattle sextet The Lashes is the latest contender in a bewildering blitz of earnest-sounding, stylishly dressed haircut bands. Its debut album, Get It, is expert corporate power-pop, hitting all the notes The Killers, My Chemical Romance, and others have already struck. On "New Best Friend," lead vocalist Ben Clark sings, "Do you want to be my new best friend tonight!/And the rest of our lives!" And that's one of the better songs; a lesser track, "The World Needs More Love Letters," offers, "The world needs more love letters/Get yourself some pen and paper now!" It's not exactly Elvis Costello, but the band's enthusiastically hooky accompaniment makes it bearable. Still, one wonders how necessary Get It really is.
