In other moves, the newspaper has hired Jeremy Voas as managing editor and is transferring associate editor Ward Harkavy to sister newspaper Westword in Denver.
Bodney, who will continue as general counsel for New Times, Inc., will become a partner in the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson. "We are thrilled with the addition of David Bodney to our firm," said Bruce Babbitt, the former governor and attorney general of Arizona and a resident partner in Steptoe & Johnson's Phoenix office. "David's remarkable background and knowledge of First Amendment and communications law will greatly strengthen this office and the entire firm."
Bodney, 38, won Arizona Press Club awards for column writing and sustained news coverage during 1992. He came to New Times from Brown & Bain, where he specialized in communications law and litigation. During his tenure there, he served as counsel to the Arizona Newspapers Association, the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona and various media clients. Bodney is a former president of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest.
At Steptoe & Johnson--a Washington, D.C.-based firm that is expanding its Phoenix office--Bodney will practice corporate and communications litigation and counseling, with a focus on First Amendment law.
Voas, 36, was editor and publisher of the Half Moon Bay Review in northern California. The Review won 1992 National Newspaper Association awards for general excellence and investigative reporting. Before becoming a publisher, Voas served as assistant city editor at the Phoenix Gazette. From 1981-84, he was the managing editor of the Sierra Vista Herald.
Harkavy, 45, an editor at New Times since 1987, has captured first places in the Arizona Press Club's editorial- and feature-writing competitions.
New Times, Inc., also owns the Dallas Observer and Miami New Times.
