The first time you hear Eilen Jewell’s voice, you may experience an interesting cross-sensory phenomenon. For example, you might be struck by involuntary synesthesia, confusing the sound of her spellbinding voice for the taste of whiskey and cream or the scent of past lovers.

Jewell’s sound – a union of folk, blues, classic country, and Western swing – has earned her well-merited attention on the music scene. Picked up by Signature Sounds Recordings, she released her national debut album, Letters from Sinners & Strangers, in June of last year, which landed her in the top 10 of the Americana weekly radio charts. Part of this success may be credited to her fearless use of silence, as the 27-year old, Boston-based singer says on her Web site, “The fewer tricks you have going on, the fewer antics, the more bare you are… there’s something much more real about that.”
