Some things in the past are better left forgotten, like bell-bottoms, balloon boy, or that time you ran naked through a public park after pounding one too many tequila shots. However, according to newly appointed Modified Arts’ co-director Kim Larkin, history can be a source of inspiration. “I thought it was important to understand our past in order to know how to move forward in the future,” Larkin says.
Modified Arts begins a new phase in its history with an opening reception for the retrospective exhibit “Looking Back on the Future.” The show features memorabilia from local institutions like The Icehouse and works by artists who have been instrumental in Phoenix's history, including Bragg's Pie Factory co-owner Beatrice Moore, Phoenix Art Museum founder Phillip C. Curtis, as well as Modified regulars James Angel and Jeff Falk. That’s a pretty killer lineup, especially considering Larkin didn’t know a thing about the Phoenix arts scene when she moved here in 2008.
“I did a lot of research,” she explains. “I think right now Phoenix has an opportunity to push itself to the next level. It’s an exciting time to be here!”
