Since her departure from Chandler Cinemas, and the subsequent, though reportedly unrelated, closing of that fine indie venue, Valley movie maven Midnite Movie Mamacita has became a wandering spirit, taking her schlock-cinema shows on the road. Having already played the Glendale 9 Drive-In and the Frontier Village in Prescott, the Mamacitas Magical Mystery Tour makes perhaps its most improbable stop yet on Friday, July 3: Shes showing Herschell Gordon Lewis The Wizard of Gore at Farrellis Cinema Supper Club.
Strange to imagine the Mamacitas maniacal mob of movie misfits invading Farrellis, which for almost a decade has provided a genteel alternative to the multiplex for Scottsdale alpha males and trophy wives in search of dinner and a show. Stranger still to think of them gathering to chow down while watching The Wizard of Gore, the 1970 release from the inventor of the low-budget splatter genre. This shocker concerns Montag the Magnificent (Ray Sager), a stage magician who subjects pretty volunteers from the audience to gruesome atrocities, which later prove not so illusory.
When ordering off Farrellis menu, you might want to avoid Bloody Marys. And red sauce.
