Mario in D-Minor

When it comes to video game music, gone are the days of 8-bit monophonic flurries and onomatopoetically challenged effects that sounded as if they were hammered out by King Koopa on a Casio keyboard.

These days, intricate and dynamic scores of such titles as Jade Empire and Beyond Good & Evil far outshine the bleeps and bloops of yesteryear, rivaling even the soundtracks currently churned out by Tinsel Town.

This evolution is celebrated symphonically via Video Games Live, an immersive concert experience featuring classic themes from a wealth of legendary titles ranging from Donkey Kong to World of Warcraft. The tunes are performed by a 42-member orchestra and choir and accompanied by interactive video, live action vignettes, and synchronized lighting.

The ode to joysticks comes to Mesa Arts Center, 1 East Main Street, on Thursday, April 7, and also boasts a festival chronicling gaming history, a costume contest, and gaming competitions. It’s gonna be mega, man.
