It would be all too easy for outsiders to call us Arizonans out on our apparent hypocrisy in celebrating Cinco De Mayo. After all, we are the "show me your papers" state and have garnered a reputation for being a tad unfriendly to our southern neighbors. Yet here were are, on the cusp of another Cinco de Drinko, eager to embrace the beloved Mexican holiday, even if we don't have a clue what it commemorates.
Sure, some might accuse us of bastardizing another country's traditions and suddenly finding a convenient sense of solidarity when booze comes into the picture. But we know better. We know damn well that AZ wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for the indelible mark that Mexican culture continues making here. That is why so many of us are going to be hungover on Seis de Mayo. Thanks will go to the Old Town Mexican Beerfest, too. It promises live music and a smörgåsbord of all things Mexican, all right in the rustic heart of Old Town Scottsdale.
