New Times Wins Numerous Alternative Newsweekly Awards

Phoenix New Times won four national awards for work published in 2012 from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia at the organization's recent convention in Miami — including a first place by staff writer Stephen Lemons for his Feathered Bastard blog.

Lemons won in the Best Individual Blog category, and the bulk of his work last year examined Arizona's flawed immigration policies and their effects on Latinos and their families. Lemons also won second place in political column-writing for his commentaries in print and on the web.

Winning a second place in the Innovation/Format Buster category was last year's Best of Phoenix, titled "Scientific Phoenix" and coordinated by managing editor Amy Silverman.

Staff writer Monica Alonzo won second in Election Coverage for her two feature stories on how immigrants altered Phoenix's political landscape in Latinos' favor. One was about how young, undocumented immigrants — angered by Senate Bill 1070 — registered thousands of new voters in the city. The other detailed how these young people changed the outcome of the District 5 race for Phoenix City Council, putting the first Latino in history in office from that heavily Mexican-American area.
