While the rest of the country flirts with fall, Indian Summer is upon us, preventing Arizonans from leaving air conditioning until the cover of darkness -- or at least the early evening.
Ballet Arizona takes full advantage of these September “summer” nights with Ballet Under the Stars. For 16 years, thousands have flocked to see full-scale main stage productions right in their community’s backyard, as local parks are transformed into beautiful production spaces, complete with costumes, lights, and a stage.
This year’s seven varied events cover classical to contemporary styles, spanning two weekends (September 19 through 21 and 26 through 28) and multiple public parks, from the Tempe Center for the Arts Amphitheater to the Paul Mason Sports Complex in Casa Grande.
For many Valley residents it’s an opportunity to experience the ballet for the first time. So grab a lawn chair or blanket and be sure to BYOB -- bottled water, that is.
The figurative curtain goes up at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 20, at the Estrella Lakeside Amphitheater, 10300 South Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. Admission is free. Visit www.balletaz.org.
