When the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, begin February 6, everyone will be watching ice hockey. But you have a chance to be a hockey hipster, bragging to all your friends about how you watched Olympic-level hockey before it was cool.
How? The Phoenix Coyotes have five -- count ‘em, five -- players who’ve been selected to represent their home countries in Sochi. Those five: goaltender Mike Smith, who’ll represent Canada; defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who’ll play for Sweden; forward Lauri Korpikoski, from Finland; and forward Martin Hanzal and defenseman Zbynek Michalek, both of whom will represent the Czech Republic. Watch these Olympians in person at the Coyotes’ home arena Saturday, February 1, when they take on the Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins, and your hipster cred is secure. The puck drops at 6 p.m. at Jobing.com Arena, 9400 West Maryland Avenue in Glendale. Call 480-563-7825 for tickets or visit coyotes.nhl.com for more.
