Indigenous Stereotypes in Sports Symposium

There is, perhaps, no issue more controversial in professional sports today than the stereotyping of Native Americans. This past year saw several major media outlets outright refuse to use the name of Washington’s football team -- and the not insubstantial amount of backlash against that decision has moved the discussion front-and-center.

If you’re looking for more perspective on the issue, consider attending Friday, January 30’s Indigenous Stereotypes in Sports Symposium at the Heard Museum, 2301 North Central Avenue. The event will feature a lecture from Kevin Gover, the director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian which will be followed by a panel discussion of the issue.

The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and the discussion starts at 8. Admission is $5. Visit
