Weekend Brunch at Boulders on Broadway

In an effort to make Mom proud, Chow Bella's taking a good, hard look at the most important meal of the day in the form of Scrambled, a weekly review of local breakfast spots.

We love breakfast -- obviously -- but let's be real, breakfast options can get a little predictable. Although we love tasting each variation of Benedicts, burritos, and sandwiches, the truth is, there's only so many ways to make delicious scrambled eggs. Lucky for us, not everyone has surrendered to breakfast monotony. And so this week we headed to Tempe to try the Boulders on Broadway brunch. Let's just say they are bringing the creativity back to breakfast.
 
How creative was the meal? Find out after the jump. 

Sunny Side: The menu is definitely unique. Although they offer most of the traditional breakfast staples, each item has its own twist. The pancakes are made with Pabst Blue Ribbon and the scramble (appropriately dubbed The Chuck Norris Scramble) is made with six kinds of meat -- including meatballs. This brunch caters to the very-hungry or very-hungover.

We decided to try the Which Came First SW Burrito ($8.99) with scrambled eggs, smoked chicken, roasted red peppers, green chilies, pepper jack cheese, and a southwestern sauce with a side of pico de galla and sour cream; The Eggs Schmenedict ($8.99) with fresh spinach, Canadian bacon, fried eggs, and a house-made hollandaise sauce, served with a side of sweet "potater" tots; and finally the Hungover Man's Best Friend ($6.99) consisting of an all beef hot dog inside a French roll spread with jalapeno cream cheese and topped with bacon, scrambled eggs, green peppers, and red onions.

Umm... wow. It was all delicious. The burrito was flavorful and a good consistency, but the creamy and spicy southwestern sauce is what put this dish over the top. Order extra sauce. The eggs on the Eggs Schmenedict were fluffy with just enough yoke, and the hollandaise sauce was buttery and not at all overpowering. The sweet "potater" tots were salty and not too sweet or greasy, creating an appetizing balance of flavors. So far so good.  Our last dish, the Hungover Man's Best friend was an extremely filling and savory concoction The jalapeño cream cheese gave the dish a punch of tastiness. And what's not to love about hot dogs in the morning?

And then we moved on to the fun part: the morning booze. We ordered the Doubleday's Bloody Mary -- a secret, spicy creation topped with bacon, the Boulders Chelada -- the same Bloody Mary mix dumped on a glass of Pabst Blue Ribbon (we recommend subbing Ranger IPA for the Pabst), and the Wake up Next to Sinead O'Connor -- an Irish coffee with a shot of Jameson. It's really hard to go wrong with morning-themed adult beverages, and of course, Boulders delivered. The Bloody Mary mix was extremely flavorful and spicy (what could they possibly have put in there?) and the Irish coffee was strong, hot and good. With drink concoctions this unique and delicious, we can easily see how breakfast can quickly turn into a bender.

Save Your Bacon: If you're looking for a healthy option, well, they don't have one. The food is savory and heavy. It's also only served on the weekend. This is clearly a great place for breakfast after a night at the bar -- not a great place to take your visiting grandma. And watch out for the football fans, they start rolling in around 11.

The Check: If we could drink Doubleday's Bloody Marys and eat Boulders on Broadway's breakfast fare every day we would. But then we'd be fat and drunk.
