DIY Spicy Watermelon Margaritas

I never knew how many different kinds of margaritas existed until Pinterest. Oh, man! It never ends...

Margaritas are my favorite. And I'm not one of those girls who always has to drink sweet, fruity stuff, either -- but sometimes it's fun to experiment.

A classic summer fruit collides with a classic tasty beverage. What results is bliss in a glass.

I will share the original proportions for the recipe, but I cut them in half for my batch as there were only two of us, and I wanted to keep the memories of this drink pleasant. Half the recipe made enough for each of us to have two drinks.

Also, the recipe says one to two cups sugar, so I went with a half-cup. It was a little too sweet for my tastes. I think it should be more like half- to one cup, but it's all up to you.


2 cups watermelon juice 1 serrano sliced in half, seeds removed 1-2 cups sugar 1 tsp salt

salt lime wedges 1 cup tequila (I used Herradura Silver; don't mess with that Cuervo shizz) 1/3 cup fresh lime juice 1/2 cup Cointreau

Three cups of cut up watermelon will yeild about two cups of juice. I had a seedless watermelon and ran three cups worth through the blender for a few seconds.

Place watermelon juice, sugar, serrano and salt in a medium saucepan over low heat just until the sugar dissolves. Allow the mixture to cool completely and then remove the serrano pepper.

Pour some high quality salt onto a small plate. Run a sliced lime wedge along the rims of your drinking glasses and dip them into salt. Fill each glass with ice.

Combine the watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice and Cointreau in a pitcher.

Pour the drinks!
