Chef James Porter doesn't want to say Petite Maison is closing, per se. But the truth is he and his wife Wendy have sold their five-year-old restaurant to new owners who will not be keeping the Petite Maison name or concept.
"We are re-appropriating the space," Porter says of the change. "It's exciting."
Petite Maison's last day will be on Saturday, November 8, and you can bet the restaurant will be going out with a bang -- the chef says you can look forward to a five- course tasting menu with guest appearances from chefs around town.
He also says he's thinking about planning a "Tapino Night" when he'll bring back some of the dishes from his restaurant that closed in 2009. Oh, and Petite Maison's annual Offal Dinner, usually held around Halloween, also is still on.
As for what Porter will be doing next, he says he's done with restaurant ownership for now. He's "moving on to different scenarios." In the immediate future, he says, he'll be doing consulting for boutique hotels both in state and out.
The Petite Maison staff will be invited to stay on under the new owners and Porter says his sous chef will be chef at the new restaurant, which will not be French. The Porters aren't saying much about what's coming besides that the new restaurant will be called The Upton.
Both Wendy and James say this has been the restaurant's "best year ever" financially and in terms of reviews. You may remember that in fall of last year, the restaurant underwent a reboot that included an updated look and new menu that moved away from classic French cuisine.
