Almost exactly one year ago, Taco Bell all but admitted that it targets the (ahem) herbal recreation market with Doritos Locos Tacos. In case you've been under a rock all this time, Doritos Locos Tacos are an unholy union of processed mass-market foodstuffs: Take a Taco Bell taco shell, and coat it with the umami neutron-bomb goodness of Nacho Cheese flavor Doritos.

After the runaway success of the original Nacho Cheese tacos (seriously, I'm pretty sure even Taco Bell was surprised by the success), Cool Ranch was an inevitable expansion of the brand. I think the public outcry for them started almost at the same time the Nacho Cheese was released. Friends, the long wait is over: Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos are now available nationwide.

I'm sure you're wondering how the new Cool Ranch tacos taste. I couldn't resist grabbing a pair (one regular, one Supreme) to find out for you. As with the original Nacho Cheese, these are way, way better than they have any right to be. Granted, with as much flavor-boosting food science as there is between both Doritos and Taco Bell, it's not much of a surprise.

The Cool Ranch flavor lends a slight buttermilk tang to the tacos, which folds in perfectly with the beef and cheese. While I found the Nacho Cheese tacos to be better as a regular taco, I think the Cool Ranch works better as a Supreme; the sour cream gives the ranch flavoring a little more backbone.

If you've had the original Nacho Cheese ones, you're probably en route to your closest Taco Bell already. If you haven't had these . . . Climb down from that ivory tower where you've been eating and go try 'em. I won't tell your friends. The Nacho Cheese ones are crazy-like-a-fox delicious. The Cool Ranch ones are even better. I shouldn't like either one, but they just plain rock. It's probably a good thing the Cool Ranch ones came second; the Nacho Cheese ones would have almost been a letdown by comparison.

Oh, if you still can't get enough of these . . . Taco Bell has been testing the chile-lime Flamas Doritos for the next release. Keep your eyes peeled, friends.
