New in Mesa: Mekong Palace

The dining mix at Mekong Plaza, the huge two-year-old Asian restaurant and grocery store complex at Dobson and Main Street in Mesa, is primarily Vietnamese, but now there's also a new full-service Chinese restaurant serving daily dim sum as well as a sprawling menu of Cantonese cuisine.

Mekong Palace is situated just inside the north entrance of the plaza, separated from the food court area by partial walls. Unlike the food court, this open dining room has crisp tablecloths, lacquered furniture, and bright crystal chandeliers.

Dim sum is available every day, along with an incredibly vast menu of items from the kitchen -- 239 in all.

Seafood is a big deal, which is apparent from the wall of fish tanks right alongside the dining area. Hong Kong-inspired dishes include mussels with black bean sauce, scallops with Chinese greens, fried prawns with spicy salt, lobster with ginger and onion, jellyfish with cold cucumber, and pan-fried sole with hot & sour sauce.

There are also beef, pork, and chicken entrees, including whole Hong Kong-style duck and chicken, sizzling plates, hot pots, fried rice, and noodle dishes. Vegetarians can look forward to everything from snow pea leaves with garlic to braised tofu in brown sauce.

Mekong Palace is at 66 S. Dobson Rd., Ste. 118, in Mesa. Call 480-962-0493 for details.
