Pizza is so universally loved because it's adaptable to any personal tastes or dietary preferences. Don't like bread? It's ok to leave the crust on the plate. Don't eat meat? Load your pie with lots of veggies. And even if you can't stand to so much as look at a tomato, there are plenty of other sauces to choose from: alfredo, pesto, or something unexpected like hummus.
But it's because pizza is a blank canvas that it also lends itself to off-the-wall adaptations. That's what this list is all about. From the decadent (like caviar) to the eccentric (like bone-in frog legs), the toppings on these ten pizzas are unbelievable.
Frankford Avenue Taco from Pizza Brain
Can you believe there's a place on earth where you can order a slice of pizza pie a la mode? This Philadelphia pizzeria has a one-of-a-kind special that no other shop will dare replicate: a slice of cheese pizza topped with fresh basil and three small scoops of pizza-flavored ice cream, a mix of tomato, basil, and garlic, which is available year-round at Little Baby's Ice Cream.
Osso Pizza with Bone Marrow from flour + water
San Francisco is known for its back-to-roots food scene, and this pizza is a perfect representation of that philosophy. The Osso pizza starts with a chewy, yeasty crust; then it's topped with roasted bone marrow and a mix of other fresh ingredients like fontina, broccoli rabe, and grated horseradish. As expected, the special ingredient makes this an extremely rich pizza, and the slightly sweet, buttery marrow is a great complement for the lightly charred crust.
Pizza Cake from Boston Pizza
This odd mash-up of savory pizza pie and presumably sweet vanilla cake isn't actually available - yet. But Boston Pizza is crowdfunding their latest innovations, including now-on-the-menu items like Pizza Tacos, Pizzaburger Sliders, and Sriracha Chicken Pizza. If you want to taste this Pizza Cake creation, vote now at the Pizza Game Changers website, where you can also check out unbelievable (and like un-makeable) concepts like a gas-powered pizza cutter and pizza car fresheners.
Luxury Caviar & Lobster from Nino's Bellissima
This pizza, called The Luxury, might be the weirdest pizza money can buy - but it will cost you a lot of it. The thin-crust pie goes beyond gourmet with a price tag of $1000. It's topped with not one but SIX types of caviar -- that's where a majority of the money goes. Then to offset all that salty roe, the pricey pizza is finished with tender, buttery Maine lobster tail.
The Everglades from Evan's Neighborhood Pizza
Located in Fort Myers, Florida, it's not too surprising to find fresh alligator on the regular menu. But from time to time, the family-owned pizza shop also serves the appropriately named The Everglades, which his topped with a trio of local exotic meats. It features not just alligator meat but frog and python too. Heads up, though, that if you find this special, a 14-inch pie will run you $45 because of the cost of python.
Spam Pizza from Brick Oven Pizza
It's not surprising that people would have made this in the comfort (and privacy) of their own kitchens, where they won't be ridiculed for topping a pizza with, of the countless options available, canned meat. But can you believe a pizzeria serves it - and not even in Hawaii, where Spam burgers are practically a delicacy? Baltimore's BOP has over 50 toppings to choose from, including the classic canned ham.
Crab Rangoon from Fong's Pizza
Though ravioli was a strange topping? This bizarre pizza takes the idea in a global direction with a totally different kind of dumpling -- in Des Moines, Iowa, of all places. Crab Rangoon are deconstructed on this inventive pie, which starts with crab, surimi, and green onion. There are two types of cheese: mozzarella and salty, asiago. Garnishes of crispy egg roll strips and sweet chilli sauce complete the creation.
The Dirty Agent from Apollonia's Pizzeria
Although it's known more for Mexican than Italian food, it's not hard to score a decent pizza in L.A. If you're in the mood for an unusual slice, this artisanal pizzeria has enough odd toppings to satisfy. The Dirty Agent is designed to highlight the menu's exotic meats. Along with onions and tomato, it's available with a choice of rattlesnake sausage, duck-bacon sausage, or alligator sausage.
Drunken Ravioli Pizza from Ian's Pizza
Pizza topped with pasta is surprisingly popular in NYC, but you'll most likely find baked ziti or mac 'n' cheese. But in Wisconsin, the carb-on-carb action is taken to another level. Ravioli is stuffed with a four-cheese blend before being layered on top of pizza crust with vodka marinara and shredded asiago.
Pizza is 4 Suckers Hard Candy
This isn't technically pizza, of course, but it's designed to fight cravings for the real comfort food. The sugar-free candy -- which is a snack, not at all a dessert -- was nominated for the Most Innovative New Product Award 2013 by National Confectionery Association. It's developed to be for everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions, and is sodium-free and gluten-free.
