Continuing Manifestos, a collection of 10(ish) life lessons and rules written by local creatives and illustrated by local designers.

Up today, lessons learned by local writer James E. Garcia, illustrated below by Casebeer:

Read Garcia's manifesto below ...

1. "...life flows on within you and without you." (George Harrison)

2. In the face of injustice, "Silence is complicity." (unknown author)

3. Liberalism is the ideology of hope.

4. The world has known few great leaders, and will never know a great many more.

5. If I'm truly satisfied, I should have no regrets.

6. When I write, I do everything I can to stay out of my way.

7. Laughter is the best drug, but some drugs really make you laugh.

8. It's all in the trying.

9. Be useful. Be alive.

10. A child's unconditional love is the purest form of spiritulism. Loving them back is a holy act.

--James E. Garcia

About the creative: James E. Garcia is a playwright, journalist, university lecturer, and owner of Creative Vistas Media, a Valley-based media consulting firm. He also serves as the director of communications at the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and as a staff associate at Urias Communications. He's taught writing and ethnic studies courses at Arizona State University since 2003. As a journalist, he has worked as a reporter, columnist, foreign correspondent and television and radio commentator.

He was the founding editor of Latino Perspectives Magazine and the first Latino Affairs correspondent for KJZZ, 91.5, the Valley's NPR affiliate. He's currently the founder and producing artistic director of New Carpa Theater Co. in Phoenix and serves on the board of the Arizona Latino Research Enterprise.

About the designer: Casebeer is a designer and visual artist who was born in Madrid, raised in Flagstaff, and flew around a lot in single engine aircraft. She was inordinately affected by the movie Jaws. She dropped her first name in favor of her last. She's been writing sentences she likes on her arms, in Sharpie marker, for almost five years.

She writes, "I was immediately smitten with Garcia's No. 6. Not only was it good advice, the visual notion of getting out of one's own way was inviting design territory. So I did what people who have fallen in love have a proclivity to do: I collaged No. 6 a love letter."
