We all have a few nasty T-shirts. They're stretched out, stained, outdated, and turns out, are a totally perfect material for some seriously cool yarn.
Even if you don't knit or crochet, you can still make the yarn and give it to someone who does. Better yet, invent a new way to use it.
One of the things I love about Pinterest is that it offers a ton of tutorials on the same thing. There are lots of pins about T-shirt yarn, but I've come to learn that some pins are better than others.
After a bit of searching, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this pin led to a video tutorial via the website Releve Design.
The website also includes written instructions, but watching the video is critical, as I found the directions confusing. Definitely refer to the above video tutorial link to learn how to do this project.
Useful Info: Another reason I went with this particular tutorial is because it showed how to cut one continuous piece of string. Many of the projects out there only teach how to cut strips. Also, this tutorial taught me to stretch the strip, which is what makes it curl in. This is an important step that a lot of people miss.
The person in the video is using what looks like an x-acto knife to cut the shirts, but fabric scissors work fine too.
I'm using a gargantuan size Q hook to crochet my t-shirt yarn into a small rug. It comes together VERY QUICKLY.
