Retrofitting sprawl. Latino urbanism. The evolving streetscape of greater Phoenix.
These are all topics of interest at this Friday's PURL Jam, an urban visual research exhibition hosted by the think tank (and branch of Arizona State University) Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory.
The event, part of the ongoing Phoenix Design Week(s), is an Ignite Phoenix-style, free exhibition of 10 quickfire presentations from a group of Arizona State Ph.D candidates.
"We wanted to bring it down to a community level and interact," says PURL assistant director Aaron Kimberlin. "Start a conversation and generate ideas."
"We kind of break it down to just graphics, and have them represent what
they are advocating as far as what they're finding through research."
The presenters were chosen from a variety of schools, including ASU's education, geographical sciences, and architecture programs.
Kimberlin says he's most looking forward to seeing a re-photography project from photographer Scott Warren and geographer Jason Roehner.
The duo's work pertains to border issues present in Ajo. "We collected photographs from the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson
and went to Ajo to try and find the exact vantage points of those
images," Warren explains.
"Once we found an exact or approximate vantage point Jason would
take a new photograph. We then looked at the historical and
contemporary photographs side-by-side or embedded within one another to
see how Ajo's landscape had changed over time."
Although the presentations are a one-time occurrence at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 7, the exhibition of research posters will be available for public viewing through December 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
