Day of the Dead celebrations may be months away -- Friday, October 31, through Sunday, November 2, to be exact -- but Phoenix Public Library is already on the lookout for Valley artists to lend their creative talents to the upcoming Día de los Muertos exhibition "Heroes: La luminaria de mi vida" at Burton Barr Library's @Central Gallery this fall.

This community exhibition, which will feature 10 altars in total, is open to Arizona residents 18 years and older. These freestanding altars, set to be no bigger than three feet in depth, four feet in width, and eight feet in height, are not confined to a traditional aesthetic but must align with the celebration of Día de los Muertos.

Interested artists must submit a description of no more than 200 words, detailing the proposed altar's meaning, materials, and connection to the theme, "Heroes: La luminaria de mi vida." Accompanying illustrations or photographs of the custom altar are encouraged.

Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Monday, August 11. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] as well as hand delivered or mailed to @Central Gallery, Burton Barr Central Library, Third Floor, 1221 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

Accepted artists will be notified Friday, August 22, and have Sunday, October 19, to install their works. This year's Día de los Muertos exhibition at @Central Gallery will run from Monday, October 20, through Saturday, November 1. For more information and to apply, visit www.phoenixpubliclibrary.org.
