Lara Plecas, What Are You Listening To?

Lara Plecas

The local artist has a show at Art Detour at her studio The Aviary from March 19 to 21. It is located at 1020 Grand Ave.

When you put your key in the ignition and turn on the radio, what station would play right now? I pretty much only listen to NPR radio. I like their take on current events happening in the world, thought-provoking talk shows, and Those Lowdown Blues.

What's the last song played on your portable music player? "Let's Do It," by Billie Holiday.

What's the first record you bought? Pearl Jam, Vitalogy. I worked at a music store at the mall in high school, circa 1994.

What's the first concert you saw? I grew up near Chicago, where they use to hold the annual Lollapalooza tour in Tinley Park every summer. I remember the first show I went to featured Primus and Natalie Merchant.

What's your favorite concert you've ever been to? It is a toss-up between Tom Waits and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, both at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix. I had front-row seats for both, and they both blew me away. That has to be my favorite place, hands down, to see a show.

Preferred format: CD, vinyl, cassette, 8-Track or digital? You just can't beat the sound of vinyl, but for convenience, the digital age is so nice not to have to deal with any business.

What's your favorite CD? Abbey Road, The Beatles.

Who is your favorite singer or band? Some of my favorite bands/musicians are: The Be Good Tanyas, Etta James, Leonard Cohen, Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, and The Velvet Underground.

Does you computer track how many times you've played something - -if so, what's at the top of the list? "Sea of Love," by Phil Phillips.

What was your favorite new or new-to-you album from 2010? Beach House, Teen Dream. I can't stop listening to this one.

What one song would you play if you had a worldwide radio audience? Easy, I would play "Run into this World" by a local musician and a great friend of mine, Lonna Kelley. She has an amazing voice and a unique sound!

Who is your favorite local musician? I always enjoy hearing local musicians Lonna Kelley, Mark Erickson and Robin Vining. They are all really dedicated to their craft.
What is your favorite local venue to see music? I enjoy seeing shows at the Rythym Room and the Orpheum Theatre in town.

What is your favorite music video? The best videos I have ever seen are done by Michael Gondry, I really like "Around the World," by Daft Punk, but it gets stuck in your head!
