Luz de Vida Benefit Compilation Unites National Indie Acts and Tucson Bands

Luz de Vida, a compilation featuring Neko Case, Spoon, Jimmy Eat World, Calexico, Giant Sand, Lenguas Largas, Robyn Hitchcock, Brian Lopez, The Meat Puppets, and many, many more, is set to see release in two formats, a 37-track digital album, and a limited-edition 12-song vinyl release, on October 18. The compilation is a joint release between a team of Tucson-based writers, musicians, venue owners, and promoters.

Fort Lowell Records will handle the vinyl release, and all funds will be donated 100% of the proceeds benefit the Tucson Together Fund, the official fund "established to assist victims, families, and witnesses of the January 8th tragedy."

The attacks of that day left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others wounded, and six people dead, including federal judge John Roll.

Set to be released during the international "Week Without Violence," the compilation unites bands from Tucson, and bands with a connection to Tucson.

"We all reached out to bands," says Eric Swedlund, a local music writer who runs the popular Catfish Vegas blog. "[There were] definitely were obvious choices like Calexico and Giant Sand. Betsy Scarinzi, the singer-songwriter from Silverbell is an ER nurse who was on duty at U.M.C. on January 8, and had a great song to contribute."

Some of the songs are directly inspired by the events, others are culled from live performances or previously released versions.

"I cry inside every time I hear it," says Fort Lowell's James Tritten of Salvador Duran's contribution, "Gabynda (Yolonda)."I don't even know what Salvador is saying, but I can feel the deep love he is sharing."

Phoenix retailers Stinkweeds and Zia Records are both confirmed to be carrying the LPs at no additional cost, Tritten says, assuring that 100% of the proceeds will go to the Tucson Together fund.
