Jesse Malin Writes Music For Forthcoming Documentary On J.D. Salinger

J.D. Salinger, the famed Catcher in the Rye author, passed away just over a month ago. Lucky timing: A documentary about him by writer/director Shane Salerno has already been in the works for five years. Rumors were circulating, but it's finally confirmed that Jesse Malin has been asked to write music for the soundtrack. Malin, a largely unknown punk singer, is probably best remembered for his old band D Generation's cover of Reagan Youth's "Degenerated," which was used as the song Adam Sandler's band just had to get on the radio in Airheads. So far Malin has written five songs, but it's unclear if any, or how many of them will make the cut.

It's interesting timing, as Jay Farrar, (Sun Volt, formerly Uncle Tupelo,) and Benjamin Gibbard, (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service,) recently teamed up to write the music for One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur, a documentary about the great beat poet. In their case, the lyrics to the music were taken directly from Kerouac's Big Sur. The first one was great. With the pressure of creating something worthy of Salinger, and the Farrar/Gibbard project not that long ago, Malin has some pretty big shoes to fill.
