It's a Good Time to Be a Smiths Fan in Phoenix

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but conventional wisdom suggests that fans of Morrisey and The Smiths are prone to naval gazing, crying, and a lot of black clothing. But that's all stereotyping, right? You don't have to be a depressive to dig the band. Even Fred "I Did It All For the Nookie" Durst likes The Smiths, and he used to party with Paris Hilton. Clearly, happy-go-lucky folks can dig the band just as much as mopey goths.

Phoenix Smiths fans might have more reasons to smile than fans anywhere other than Manchester. There's that upcoming Smiths comic book by Phoenix writer Shawn Demumbrum, a DJ performance at Sticky Fingers this weekend from former-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke at Bar Smith, and now, news that Los Esmiths, Calexico, California's premier tribute to The Smiths, are headed to Phoenix for a Saturday, October 1 gig at Shadowplay at Rips Ales and Cocktails.

Fans have long held their breath for a Smiths reunion. In 2006, Goldenvoice offered The Smiths $5 million to reunite for Coachella, and they still said no.

Los Esmiths offer up a convincing take on the tunes of Moz and the guys -- and they have even convinced, you guessed it, Andy Rourke who spins at Bar Smith on Friday, to join them onstage, as evidenced by this video.

It's too bad their dates don't line up, but hey -- it's good to split your Smiths time up. Wouldn't want to turn out like Fred now, would we? Okay, I know...the joke isn't funny anymore.
