Lisa Whealy, What Are You Listening To?

Lisa Whealy

Whealy is the CEO of Surface to Air Records and owner of Mountain Music Promotions.

When you put your key in the ignition and turn on the radio, what station
would play right now?
 Radio iPod.

What's the first album you bought? Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, Works Volume 2.

What's the first concert you saw? The Go-Go's at the Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood, if that isn't counting stumbling upon Aerosmith performing at Magic Mountain before it became Six Flags in California between roller coasters.

What's your favorite concert you've ever been to? This is a tough one so I am breaking this down: Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto and Less than Jake in 2007 when I received a black eye. I was kicked by a crowd surfer and lost my spot at the front. I talked with Tommy Chong while nursing the growing bruise with a cup of ice. As a result of his challenge, I collaborated on "The Priest and the Matador" music video for Senses Fail through the now defunct NetStudio.

Dan Sultan at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney, Australia, which had the stickiest floors since the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Tyrone Wells, Tony Lucca, and Keaton Simons at Clubhouse Music Venue in 2008 after my daughter had been in a horrific car accident. On crutches with two breaks and a crushed foot, the doormen put a chair in front of the stage so she could see the show. Keaton and Tony have remained great friends. Ask Tony about cat wrangling this summer at the High Mountain Music Fest some time.

What's the last song played on your music player? Young the Giant, "Cough Syrup (Live from Soho)".

Preferred format: CD, vinyl, cassette, 8-Track or digital? Digital for ease of use and clarity, but nothing beats a pair of padded headphones tapped into the listening rooms at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

What's your favorite album? The Clash, London Calling, or The Beatles' white album.

Who is your favorite singer or band? I have been revisiting The Specials and The English Beat lately.

What was your favorite new or new-to-you album from 2010? The soundtrack from the PBS show Roadtrip Nation, Season 7, as it opened up a new world of indie artists, many of whom I had never heard. Brilliant compilations put together by a fascinating show which airs on PBS.

What one song would you play if you had a world-wide radio audience? "My Own Two Hands," Ben Harper.

Who is your favorite local artist? Tobie Milford. From his first demo recordings to his live performances today, I am still humbled to be working with him at Surface to Air Records and Mountain Music Promotions.

What is your favorite local venue to see music? Love a few for different reasons. The Duce for amazing food and drink to go with your tunes, and places like The Lost Leaf that bring friends together to enjoy live music together.

What is your favorite music video? Young the Giant, "Cough Syrup and Michael Franti and Spearhead, "The Sound of Sunshine."
