Regret, The Informer at Art One (Friday)
As our resident "Arty Girl" Lilia Menconi reported a few weeks ago, this Scottsdale gallery has experienced a rather heavy duty cash crunch over much of the past year , much like a many other nearby businesses and art spots. One way in which owner Kraig Foote has attempted to keep his leaky ship afloat (besides hawking most of his private reserve of art and sacrificing his residence to the foreclosure gods) is by booking occasional hardcore and indie shows at the space, the latest of which features San Francisco thrash-core band Ordstro, Missouri-based rockers Canyons, the locals of Parade of Pigs, and Kansas City's Regret, The Informer. 7 p.m., $5. (4120 North Marshall Way, Scottsdale, 480-946-5076)
Chop Shop Fridays at Seis Frias (Friday)
The lyrical tricksters of Bomb Legacy know a thing or two about making magic on the microphone and they'll prove it when they hook up with fellow hip-hop artists Rap-N-Pillage, Young G, Jrydah, and other ghetto-fab performers at this East Valley club. DJs B-Side and Rabbit will be one the ones and twos. 7 p.m., $6 after 9. (111 South Dobson Road, Mesa)
1977 at Hollywood Alley (Friday)
The tattoo-heavy members of some of the Valley's best punk outfits (Glass Heroes, Thee Unfortunates) have joined forces to create a locally-fueled supergroup dubbed 1977. Their mission? To provide an evening-long tribute to the three-chord music straight from the era when Carter was in the White House and Sid Vicious was still alive (and doing shitloads of heroin). The garage rockers of Kill Baby Kill and Scorpion vs. Tarantula will also perform while DJ Notah and DJ Mykel will drop 70s tracks all night. 9 p.m., free. (2610 West Baseline Road, Mesa, 480-820-7117)
Arizona Cardinals Back to Camp Party at Jilly's (Friday)
Kurt Warner and the rest of the Red Birds are gonna have to put in some major work if they hope to repeat this year's Cinderella-like appearance in the Super Bowl, starting off with the typically grueling training camp later this month. That includes the Cards' latest crop of draftees (such as Greg Toler, Will Davis, and Cody Brown) who will hopefully help add some punch to the Crimson Crusaders come September. But before you witness these rookies hitting the gridiron this fall, you can find these rookies letting it all hang out at Jilly's during a special pre-season soiree. Ton Don will serve as host and DJ Essence will spin R&B, hip-hop, and Top 40 cuts all night. Drink specials include $1 Long Islands, as well as $3 rum punch and Heineken. 9:30 p.m., $9. (825 North 54th Street, Chandler, 480-763-6909)
All Christians Will Be Fed to the Lions Showcase at MADCAP Theatres (Friday)
We're big believers in the practice of urban reuse, like when a former crackhouse gets converted into a coffee place or a dilapidated warehouse becomes an art gallery. Needless to say, we were more than delighted to hear that the old Centerpoint Theatre (which Dan Harkins saw fit to abandon in 2007) in downtown Tempe was transformed into a performance/music venue earlier this year. Live entertainment -- ranging from improv comedy to burlesque dancing -- is presented regularly, such as this weekend's gig featuring music from indie popsters The Crush, singer/songwriter Jacob Tyler Lucas, The Haymarket Squares, and three other bands. 7 p.m., $6. (730 South Mill Avenue, Tempe, 480-634-5192)
Dreamy Lingerie and Swimwear Launch Party at the Mondrian (Saturday)
There are a few good reasons why you might consider attending this sexy soiree: The Mondrian's Midnight Room provides quite a swanky background in which to waste away a weekend evening, not to mention the fact that eye candy will abound, and the drinks will be free. Oh yeah, and there will also be some smoking-hot females parading around in skimpy designer unmentionables. Try not to get any drool in your complimentary White Russian. 8 p.m., free. (7353 East Indian School Road, Scottsdale, 480-308-1100).
Punk Rock Karaoke at Palo Verde Lounge (Saturday)
Do you happen to know the lyrics to the DK's "Moon Over Marin" by heart? How about "Germ Free Adolescents" by X-Ray Spex or "The KKK Took My Baby Away" by the Ramones? Sounds like you'll be in great shape to take a shot at playing frontman while the members of The Relics provide the tunes. The P-Town band will be helping raise some funds for the Coffin Draggers roller derby squad with a night of PBRs and punk karaoke where patrons can bid on the opportunity to get up and sing with the band. 8 p.m., free. (1015 West Broadway Road, Tempe, 480-968-9221)
Inkenstein Tattoo Company Anniversary (Saturday)
Chris Bailey and Jason Ballard have gotten under the skin of a lot of people in the 12 months since they opened the doors of their Glendale tattoo emporium, needling their way into more than a thousand patrons combined (a small chunk of which likely suffered some regret after realizing that Edward and Bella do not a memorable tattoo make). The pair is commemorating said landmark with a birthday bonanza with music from Dog of the Moon, Numbers on Napkins, and other bands, as well as beer gardens, dunk tanks, and other shenanigans. 8 p.m., free. (7120 North 55th Drive, Glendale, 623-271-7411)
Big Pimp Saturdays at Afterlife (Saturday)
What's your market value these days, fellas? Are you traveling with a Can you draw in the honeys like a fourth-degree trim reaper? If that's the case, be sure to bring a coterie of chickadees with you to Afterlife, as the brah with the largest posse of female admirers can score prizes and giveaways, like a limo package. The after hours establishment will also offer its usual post-2 a.m. mix of hookah lounges, go-go dancers, casting calls for modeling agencies, oxygen shots, and other non-alcoholic distractions. 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.; $6 for those on the guest list (call 602-214-3539), $10-$15 for everyone else. (4282 North Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale)
