DUI Suspect Passes Out While Driving; He Was Out So Long He Ran Out of Gas

A DUI suspect who passed out in the middle of a Phoenix street while behind the wheel of his SUV was apparently sleeping for so long that he ran out of gas.

Jason Taylor, 22, was found shortly after 5 a.m. by a newspaper deliveryman. Taylor was slumped over the steering wheel of his Jeep Compass on a residential street near 23rd Avenue and Cactus Road, according to court documents obtained by New Times.

The deliveryman tried to check on Taylor, and Taylor slightly cracked open the door -- before leaning back into the seat, and falling asleep again.

Police were called, and a responding officer was able to get Taylor to wake up a little bit.

When asked what happened, Taylor replied, "I got drunk," according to the documents.

Taylor, who reeked of alcohol, had gone almost two months since his last DUI conviction, the documents state. His license had been suspended for that.

Police noted that the key was in the "on" position, and the car was in drive, leading officers to believe that Taylor's car ran out of gas at some point in the night.

Taylor admitted to drinking a six-pack of beer -- before he drank an 18-pack of beer, according to the documents.

Taylor's blood-alcohol level at the time of his arrest, shortly after 5:30 a.m., was .17 -- more than double the legal limit of .08.

He was booked into jail on one count of aggravated DUI.
