Arizona has some of the weakest gun laws in the country, and one gun-violence-prevention group claims they flat out "lack common sense."
We could have told you that -- in Arizona, you can bring a gun to the bar with you for fuck's sake.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (named after James Brady, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, who was shot in an assassination attempt on Reagan) released it's gun-law scorecard for each state today, and Arizona scored worse than nearly every state in the country.
Out of 100 possible points, Arizona scored two.
The only state to score worse than Arizona was Utah, which earned no points.
Even Texas and Montana managed a higher score than Arizona, with Texas coming in with nine points and Montana earning four.
The points are based on sets of criteria that recognize laws states have on the books that help curb gun violence. Check out the full scorecard here.
Arizona earned its two points because there is no law on the books that requires universities to allow guns on campus.
If State Senator Jack Harper has his way and his bill forcing universities to allow professors to carry concealed weapons on college campuses is passed, Arizona could lose the only two points it's got.
The major concern of the Brady Campaign is how easy it is for people to buy and traffic guns in Arizona.
"Since Arizona does not require Brady criminal background checks on all firearm sales, including those at gun shows, gun traffickers don't need to leave the state to funnel illegal guns to felons and gang members," says Paul Helmke,Brady Campaign president. "Arizona officials have done nothing in the past year to stop the flow of illegal guns within the state, including closing the loophole that allows dangerous people to walk into gun shows and buy guns without background checks."
The group's final analysis of Arizona is that the state "lacks common sense gun laws."
