Khan was initially hired as a firefighter in Phoenix in 1982 and also served as the department's spokesman for some time.

He became chief in 2007, taking over for Alan Brunacini, who spent 28 years as Phoenix's fire chief.

Back in 2007, then-New Times writer Sarah Fenske wrote about Khan's first moves on the job, which included a reorganization that riled up some people within the department.

A city spokeswoman says the city manager will appoint an acting fire chief before Khan's retirement.
