Sure, we realize you can catch a Mexican soap opera anytime just by turning on the TV. But if you want to watch something a bit more artful, check out the "Golden Mexican Film Review" this Saturday at the Burton Barr Library.
The Phoenix library, in conjunction with the Consulate General of Mexico's Phoenix branch office, will screen three films from famed Mexican director Emilio Fernandez.
We haven't seen any of them, but we assume the 1940s peliculas are some of the best Mexico's version of Hollywood (Mexiwood?) has produced. Best of all, the festival is free.

Phoenix Public Library Hosts "Golden Mexican Film Review"
Phoenix Public Library will host the "Golden Mexican Film Review" ("Reseña del Cine de Oro Mexicano") from 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the Pulliam Auditorium, Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave.
Three classic Mexican films, directed by Emilio "El Indio" Fernández, will be screened. Admission is free.
Schedule:
o 10:30 a.m. to noon - "La Perla," a drama based on the novel "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck o 1 to 2:40 p.m. - "Bugambilia," a romantic drama set in mid-19th century Mexico o 3 to 4:30 p.m. - "Salón México," a melodrama set in a 1930s cabaret
The films are presented by the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix.
