Univision came out on top in the Valley, and according to numbers crunched after February sweep, the Spanish-language station emerged the most watched among 18- to 49-year-olds during all time slots -- even when compared to its English-language competitors.
Nationwide, it ranked fourth -- for the first time beating out NBC.
Is it better programing? Those titillating novelas? Or simply a reflection of a growing Latino population?
Network officials say it's all about their efforts to deliver "culturally relevant" content viewers can't get anywhere else.
"Univision presents the news, information, sports and entertainment that matter most to Latinos in Phoenix," a spokesperson tells New Times. "That is why we continue to beat the ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox stations in the market."
Univision noted the following highlights in a press release reporting their top-ranking ratings based on Nielsen stats.
"Noticias 33" (News 33) ranked as the No. 1 Monday through Friday 10 p.m. newscast. In fact, 30 percent more 18- to 49-year-olds, and 12 percent more 25- to 54-year-olds are watching Univision's newscast than its closest competitor KPNX-NBC.
During the weekday, KTVW 33 (Univision) had more viewers during primetime than the major English-language network affiliates: KNXV-ABC, KPHO-CBS, KPNX-NBC and KSAZ-FOX. And FOX, the Spanish-lanugage network's closest competitor, trailed Univision by 40 percent among 18- to 34-year-olds.
And, yeah, they did produce a video to blow
themselves their own horn.
