Democrat and former state lawmaker Kyrsten Sinema has kept her seat in Congress, easily besting her Republican competitor, Air Force vet Wendy Rogers.
Sinema's victory in Arizona's CD9 flew against the prevailing winds nationally in a heavily Republican election night. So did the apparent victory of Ann Kirkpatrick in CD1 against cowboy-hat-wearing Republican Andy Tobin. By midnight with about 90 percent of precincts reporting, it appeared Kirkpatrick would keep her 52-48 lead against Tobin.
But the southern-Arizona CD2 race between Democrat Ron Barber and Republican Martha McSally had a difference of only about 250 votes at about midnight with about two-thirds of precincts reporting. Looks like a toss-up at this point.
Meanwhile, Raul Grijalva and Ruben Gallego didn't break a sweat in their races for Congress.
On the Republican side, Paul Gosar had a predictable win against Democrat and marijuana aficionado Mike Weisser. And yes, we'll see David Schweikert, Trent Franks and Matt Salmon for another couple of years, too.
"We're fortunate -- the district is a really good fit," Franks says of his easy victory against Americans Elect candidate Stephen Dolgas in the heavily Republican CD8. He says he's got a good deal with his constituents -- he helps them, and they help him.
