If you got shit-canned one night and stole a fire helmet, of course you're gonna post pictures of yourself wearing it on Facebook. How could you not?
Keep in mind, though, it's a felony. Just ask 23-year-old Daniel Schmidt.
Schmidt was arrested earlier this week after someone turned him in to police after seeing photos he'd posted on Facebook of him wearing a helmet he stole out of a fire truck.
According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, Schmidt broke into a fire truck parked at the Regional Fire Rescue parking lot in Casa Grande on Sunday.
He stole four Kenwood radios, two pick-head axes, one LED flashlight, and one fire helmet.
Authorities estimate the value of the items at about $1,600.
Schmidt probably would have got away with, too -- had he not posted
photos of himself wearing the stolen helmet on Facebook, that is.
The day after the burglary, authorities handed out fliers around the
community asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect. It
didn't take long before someone who'd seen Schmidt's Facebook post turned him
in.
Schmidt was arrested the next day.
Once in custody, Schmidt told police he was drunk the night he broke
into the fire truck and offered to help police retrieve the stolen
items. So far, he's returned all but two of the items -- two radios
valued at $500 a pop.
Schmidt's been charged with third-degree burglary, a class four felony.
It should also be noted that Schmidt only has 79 Facebook friends.
