91. Coconut Raspberry Brownie at Karl's Quality Bakery
After more than 20 years in business at a small spot on 35th Avenue in Sunnyslope, Karl's Quality Bakery was forced to move with just 10 days notice from the bakery's landlord. Father-and-daughter pastry chef team Karl and Christine Boerner landed not far from the original location, in a north Phoenix strip mall 111 E. Dunlap Avenue.
Lucky for us, the pair didn't miss a beat. A't this new-ish locale (it's been a couple years), you can find all your Karl's Quality Bakery favorites; in addition to breads, pastries, and doughnuts, the bakery sells handmade Swiss chocolates and some "healthier" options such as the well-loved bran muffins. Other popular offerings (read, hard to get unless you get there earlier) include the apple fritter doughnut and the bakery's Cronut-inspired "Kronuts," which come in flavors such as lemon basil and pina colada.
Since I'm not an early riser and rarely get to Karl's in time to grab the most high-demand pastries, I've grown fond of the raspberry coconut brownie. The layers of rich, chocolate brownie and sweet coconut get just the right amount of acid from a barely-there layer of raspberry making for a treat that's indulgent in just the right way.
