Now Open

The Coffee Studio in Phoenix Is Now Open

Curious Valley residents who frequent Indian School Road near 24th Street have waited since late summer for the opening of The Coffee Studio, located at 2415 East Indian School Road. The shop's giant sign on the northeast corner of the intersection promises “Fresh, Local, Real,” coffee, but since August, all the space offered was paper-covered windows. A homemade sign taped to the door promised something was coming soon, but the parking lot stood empty for five long months.

Now, The Coffee Studio is finally open.

“There were a lot of issues that had to be dealt,” says Coffee Studio assistant manager Matthew Messer of the many months it took the shop to open. Lots of repairs and renovations were needed to improve the property prior to opening — the most critical involving the plumbing — he says, but the building owner was reluctant, which forced the owner, Manuel Aguirre, to seek legal counsel.

Earlier in the year, the owner also suffered a family loss that delayed opening plans. And while The Coffee Studio finally opened its doors in November, just days before Christmas on December 21, the coffee shop was broken into.

“They smashed a window and there was about $10,000 in damage done,” Messer says. “They just pretty much grabbed everything they could grab that was electronic.”

Despite the handful of holdups, Messer says he’s hopeful business will pick up. Aguirre comes to the project from a background in architecture, and Messer says the vibe of The Coffee Studio is design-oriented with bookshelves and a drafting table. Messer and his girlfriend Brittany Kasch, also the shop's manager and head barista, have restaurant and coffee shop experience, and they’ve set up shop to be inviting as a workspace for creatives, he says.

The Coffee Studio is currently open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit the Coffee Studio Facebook page.
