In an industry where top earners are praised as "electronic cash kings," it is no surprise that the world of DJing and dance music is preponderantly patriarchal.  

Despite the historical context and deafening statistics of male dominance within the DJ industry, women are now more visible than ever. While there is still much under-representation of women in this arena, there has been a noticeable emergence of female DJs and producers quickly gaining momentum and ultimately giving their male counterparts a run for their money. Phoenix is home to, and has given rise to, some incredibly talented women who know how to hold their own behind the turntables. Whether up-and-coming or established, these women are shaking up the scene with their sound and have no intentions of being silenced anytime soon.

Let no one say that the women of Phoenix don't know how to work a turntable. Read on and get familiar with the faces of Phoenix's 10 best female DJs. 

DJ Blossom
Rising producer Emilie Fromm (aka Blossom) is on the fast track to success. With performances at major dance music events like Night Bass, Space Yacht, and Phoenix Lights under her belt, it's hard to believe that Blossom is barely beginning her journey. Her production talents have quickly captured the attention of many, including well-known musical artist Ghastly, who featured her bootleg of Rusko's "Skanka" on his Diplo & Friends Mix and has been incorporating it into his sets worldwide. Blossom recently released an official Fools Gold Records remix for Callie Reiff and Dapp as part of their  "Wobble Remixes" compilation.  


DJ Defense.Mekanizm
Performing under the moniker Defense.Mekanizm, Suzy Homewrecker specializes in industrial-electro, glitchstep, and dark electro music. She participates as a resident DJ for the monthly fetish-themed dance party event CUPCAKE! at Rogue Bar. 


DJ Drea
Recognized as one of Arizona's most sought-after DJs and co-founder of Desert House Productions, DJ Drea certainly knows a thing or two when it comes to DJing. With more than a decade's worth of experience, Drea has amassed an expansive musical library, an impressive list of clientele, including Facebook, Trader Joe's, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the title of "Top Club DJ in Metro Phoenix" by Arizona Republic. 


DJ Hemmesphere
After learning to master her craft in the small town of Show Low, Arizona, Karen Hemmes (aka Hemmesphere) migrated down to the city of Phoenix where her career began to heat up. The Canadian transplant has since supported the likes of major dance music artists including Felix Cartel, Bingo Players, Chuckie, and Flux Pavillion, and has graced the stages of festivals around the Valley including Wet Electric, Electric Dreams, and the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live 2016. 


DJ Javin
With weekly radio gigs on both Pitbull's Sirius XM Globalization channel and locally known POWER 98.3/101.9, DJ Javin (pronounced JAY-vin) is a powerhouse in the DJ booth. The 25-year-old's cutting and intricate mixing techniques are admired far and wide by viewers of her Bedroom Sessions series on DJCityTV. In 2015, her hard work and dedication scored Javin a competing spot in the Phoenix regional qualifier for the Red Bull Thre3style competition. Javin performs regularly around the Valley, including her Friday-night residency at AQUA Nightclub for Fantasy Fridays.  




DJ Jen Jones
Don't let the pink rhinestone headphones fool you. DJ Jen Jones is a force to be reckoned with behind the decks. Her high-energy sets, composed of mostly hip-hop, house, and rock music, have landed Jones performances at some of the largest events in the nation, including her recent 15-show stint as the official DJ for the Copa America Centenario. When she is not on the road, Jones can be found DJing at an array of venues around the Valley including Maya Day + Nightclub and Degree 270 at Talking Stick Resort, where she currently holds residencies. Her collaborative efforts with Adrian Michaels on the Turnt Up! EP and tracks "Hit Em" and "Pimpin" have earned the DJ dynamo positions on Beatport's electro and house charts. 

DJ Juma 
Hip-hop, Top 40, Latin, electro: You name it, and DJ Juma spins it. Pulling influence from both coasts, Juma has developed an eclectic sound for herself. Whether she's spinning at Degree 270 at Talking Stick Resort or holding it down on The Beat 101.1 and Mega 104.3, Juma provides a positively fun environment.
 


Miss DJ MJ
This Phoenix native has DJed clubs, radio, and private events across the country. With more than 13 years of radio industry experience, Miss DJ MJ's talents have earned her supporting positions for many talented musical artists including the likes of Taylor Swift, Pitbull, and Ludacris. Her effortlessly cool personality makes Miss DJ MJ a a hot commodity at venues around town. From fashion shows to nightclubs and everything in between, Miss DJ MJ has done it all. She's even written a book.
 


Musa Mind
Having picked up the trade at the age of 28, Fanny Edith Robles (aka Musa Mind) is a true testament to the belief that it is never too late to pursue your passion. Beginning her journey in 2010, Musa Mind has quickly risen the ranks and become a household name within the local DJ community. Her knack to effortlessly blend house, hip-hop, and cumbia music has been recognized by many, earning her the title of Phoenix New Times Best Hip Hop DJ (people's choice) three years in a row. Musa Mind serves up the Latin flavor regularly at venues in downtown Phoenix such as SideBar, Bar Smith, Phoenix Art Museum, and Sutra Studios.  
DJ Stoneypie
Tara Lopez, aka Stoneypie, is a 26-year-old Phoenix native who got her start in DJing when her good friend, DJentrification, asked her to perform as a guest at 602'sdays, a weekly event hosted by Bikini Lounge. She works closely with the Stateside Presents team, performing at venues around the Valley, including Crescent Ballroom, where she spins an all-vinyl set weekly as part of Friday Night Funk. Behind the decks, Tara describes herself as "eclectically modern cool." When she is not DJing, Tara can be found working on her production skills, thumbing through the pages of a nonfiction book or jamming out on the bass guitar and piano.
