From now until we publish the 2016 edition of Best of Phoenix, New Times is naming 100 Tastemakers — members of our local culinary community who help shape the way we eat, drink, and think about food in Phoenix. Some you'll know, and for others, it'll be a first introduction, but each person on our list deserves a nod for helping make our city so delicious. Oh, and while you're here, be sure to check out our list of 100 Creatives.

9. Anthony Canecchia of SanTan Brewing Company

Anthony Canecchia is the founder, owner, and head brewer at SanTan Brewing Company in downtown Chandler, which means if you've ever downed a pint of Devil's Ale or popped a can of Mr. Pineapple, then you've tasted the fruits of his labor.

Canecchia has been a professional brewer in Arizona since 1996, and in 2007, he ventured out to start his own brewery with the mission of pairing craft beer with craft food that would inspire great conversation. With the help from his culinary and brewing teams, Canecchia has built SanTan into a destination for the diners and drinkers in the southeast Valley and beyond. His style of brewing SanTan craft beers have now become known as “Southwestern Style Ales,” beers that are brewed and designed for hot and dry climates.

My go to place for Vietnamese in Phoenix is Saigon in Chandler. Best pho in the state, however, their chicken curry soup is unmatched in all of my travels.

The best-kept secret is in Phoenix is The Ostrich bar. Built in the former 1920s-era speakeasy space beneath the San Marcos Hotel, it also happens to be 100 feet away from SanTan Brewing in downtown Chandler.

Beer should always be made by brewers, which is also a reflection of the SanTan Brewing mission statement. SanTan Brewing is dedicated to pairing craft beer with craft food and the art of conversation.

I knew that I wanted to make beer when my first batch of homebrew turned out delicious and got me and my friends buzzed. I thought that I had invented FIRE!!! I dropped out of the school of archaeology at University of Arizona in 1995 and pursued brewing as a career. My mother has only recently gotten on board with the whole thing.

My best of advice for a home brewer is brew what you want to drink and not what others think you should brew. It is infinitely more rewarding.
