Upscale Modern Manor is a prime but pricey place for refurbished big‑name Midcentury Modern couches and hard‑to‑find ceramics. Qcumberz houses a splendidly random assortment of affordable goods, from old neon signage to avocado green vinyl sofas. Be sure to plan ahead for your Sweet Salvage visit, because the high‑end vintage store is open only four days a month starting every third Thursday.
Monique Sandoval's boutique is a girly‑girl's dream. With white‑washed brick walls, wedding gowns, and assorted sparkly things, the shop's stocked with accessories from Sandoval's favorite Etsy storefronts, Xappaland jewelry, and Sandoval's own formal designs. She specializes in airy bridal wear but also dabbles in dainty day dresses. Don't see what you want? Sandoval can custom-make it for you.
Jennifer Mumford's serious about her denim. And it should come as no surprise that her boutique, HUB Clothing, follows suit. Formerly located in Scottsdale, the shop opened next to Churn in CenPho last summer. With a bigger space, Mumford has expanded her women's section. But you can still expect to see brands like Nudie, The Portland Collection, and Diesel.
Strip mall Medlock Plaza (on the northwest corner of Camelback and Central) is indie shopping at its best. Frances specializes in perfect gal-pal gifts and on‑trend women's clothing from brands like Free People and Frye. Next door is record shop Stinkweeds, where indie classics and fresh picks from NPR's playlists are in heavy rotation, and the ultra‑friendly staff is ready with off‑beat recommendations, too. To play those nifty records you just bought, head to Arizona Hi‑Fi, where you'll find all the high‑performance (and high‑priced) music equipment of your audiophile dreams. For a quick and easy (though not exactly painless) makeover, neighboring Halo offers a variety of piercings ranging from $15 to $50.
Sixteen thousand square feet is nothing to sneeze at, and neither is the variety of antiques and collectibles you'll find at the fancy pants Antiques. There's a mélange of eye candy here, but of particular note is the glassware, which includes pieces from Waterford and Lalique that'll leave you agape.
If salvage makes you swoon and you haven't checked out Vintage Industrial, take note. The business deals in vintage‑inspired furniture like crank tables and A‑frame desks made with repurposed or refurbished materials. Call for appointment viewing.
Heavy Pedal's not just a brand, it's a lifestyle. Victor Vasquez and Terrence Patrick opened their store late last year to vend their bikes, kits, and T‑shirts (adorned with in‑your‑face phrases like "fuck luck" and "see you in hell").
Sixth Street Shops
For a vintage outfit fix, sidestep Roosevelt Street and head a couple of blocks south on Sixth Street. There you'll find chic, ladylike vintage clothing at Andrea Engelsberg's boutique, Annie Boomer Vintage. Next door is Cellar Door Vintage, which specializes in quirky throwback T‑shirts and eclectic pop culture accessories. The place with the plaid exterior walls? That's GROWop. With a curated combination of vintage finds, up‑and‑coming fashion labels, and home goods, it's a must‑shop.
Artwork's not just buyable at MADE, it's affordable. In a historic house, you can peruse wares from local artisans, knickknacks, artist prints, novelty items (luchador bottle opener, anyone?), and must‑read books just off Roosevelt.
Revolver is a crate‑digger's Candyland. When you drop by, expect to stay for a while. You'll need some time to browse the thousands of new and used LPs -- snd that's just the vinyl section. The shop also carries turntables, DVDs, novelty T‑shirts, books about your favorite rockers, and CDs.
