While the rest of the country is super excited to celebrate freedom this weekend with barbecues, spending time with friends and family, and fireworks, we're excited for a different type of freedom — the freedom from having to open our wallets in order to be entertained. So close those billfolds and hide those credit cards, because we've found three things to do this week that won't cost you a dime. And, really, what's more American than that?
Get Lit: Conversation and Cocktails with Four Chambers Press
In what some would say was a more cultured time, people would gather in cafes or pubs to discuss literature and philosophy for the sake of expanding their own minds. Well, Four Chambers Press is aiming to bring this kind of sophisticated culture to Phoenix with Get Lit: Conversation and Cocktails with Four Chambers Press. Oh, and they're bringing a little alcohol into the mix, too, of course. This month, ASU lecturer of English Rosemarie Dombrowski will lead a discussion about what makes something a literary artifact. Prepare to get lit (and learned) on Thursday, July 2, starting at 7 p.m. in the The Reading Room within the Rose Room at Valley Bar, located in the basement of 130 North Central Avenue. Adults' Night Out
Okay, people, we know you love your kids and everything, but on Friday, July 3, it's time to call that babysitter and leave the kiddos at home. Grab all of your other parental friends and head to the Arizona Science Center for the July installment of Adults' Night Out. Of course, those adults without kids are encouraged to enjoy the awesome nerdiness of the Science Center from 5:30 to 9 p.m., too. While some exhibitions and special features will still require a small fee, general admission to the museum is completely free. Plus, DJ Dragon will be spinning a killer soundtrack for the night and a cash bar will be at your disposal. Check out www.azscience.org for more info.
FIFA Women's World Cup 2015
What's the perfect cure for a terrible Independence Day-induced hangover? Um, obviously a few more drinks and some soccer. On Sunday, July 5, FilmBar has exactly what you'll need when it screens the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup starting at 4 p.m. Unfortunately, we can't predict the future and the two teams facing off have yet to be determined. But no matter who's playing, we can predict that it will be an awesome match. Seating for the screening is first-come, first-served. So be sure to get there early for the best seats.
