35: Cindy Dach
Cindy Dach had believed she was going to write one of the great American novels that would have been released in both hardcover and paperback, and then optioned for a small independent film. After receiving her MFA, she realized that she didn't want to spend that much time alone in a room with her computer. She took her two degrees (Marketing and Creative Writing) and headed into the book business.
Dach is now the co-owner/general manager at Changing Hands Bookstore, where she claims creativity is every Indie bookstores' survival guide. She also co-owns MADE art boutique in Roosevelt Row, which features local handmade wares and hosts a variety of crafting workshops and themed exhibitions. She co-founded eye lounge and Sixth Street Studios. As a board member and co-founder of Roosevelt Row, CDC, she works collaboratively to help cultivate a downtown creative and walkable community.
When she's idle, she likes the quiet practice of making things with her hands. She is currently obsessed with embroidery, but also crochets with wire and makes handmade books and cards.

- A photograph of Allen Ginsberg taking a picture of me as I was taking a
picture of him.
2. What was your last big project?
We just redecorated MADE adding both color and wallpaper. Our fall author series at Changing Hands is pretty great, but I cannot yet release all the details. I've also been working on a large embroidery piece.
Patience is not one of my virtues, so I usually work on small pieces. It's been both challenging and exciting to revisit a large piece while figuring out the details. However, it's nowhere ready to be called my last big project, since it's far from finished. It should be ready for a group exhibition in October.
3. What's your next big project?
Organizing all the papers in my life.
4. Why do you do what you do?
I get bored quickly.
The opportunities present themselves.
I'm really bad at saying No.
5. What's something you want phoenix to know about you? (And if you're game, what's something you DON'T want phoenix to know about you?)
a. I do like to hike and be outdoors, even if I don't find the time to actually do it.
b. I have believed, since my mid-twenties, that if I were at a dinner party with Bruce Springsteen and Patty Scialfa, we would all become friends.
