When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives.
Wayne Rainey is a third generation native whose grandfather was a cattle rancher and cotton farmer. He is an ardant supporter of the arts and artists in Arizona and the owner of the monOrchid Creative Co lab and Studios on Roosevelt Row and until very recently Holga's artist's apartments.
His work has won several awards and been published in Art in America, Communication Arts, Photo District News and he and or his projects have been cited in both the LA and NY Times as a major catalyst in the development of downtown Phoenix and its arts scene.
Rainey says his mission is to support, explore, challenge, and champion the ways arts and artists integrate into urban communities and make the city sustainably whole and incidently oh so cool.
I came to Phoenix with . . . I'm a native -- my family has been here for generations.
I make art because. . . words can only tell a part of a story -- art allows us to contemplate the whole.
I'm most productive when . . . I'm working with other creatives. I love to riff and art is music.
My inspiration wall is full of . . . all sorts of tears from photo mags and books. I have dozens of books from the masters.
I've learned the most from . . . trial and error. If I'm completely comfortable, there's a good chance I missed an opportunity.
Good work should always. . . speak for itself -- no caption needed.
The Phoenix creative scene could use more . . . self esteem -- Phoenix and especially its universities have a bad case of "anyone from somewhere else." We have an enourmously rich talent pool here and too often we fail to see and nuture what is right before us. Because of this, we have talent suck from other cities.
