1968’s Hair was a groundbreaking Broadway musical with a killer soundtrack, all about hippies and love and drugs and stopping the war and resisting the Man, man. Seriously. And hair, of course. Those days might be the last time the elements of a musical drenched our culture so thoroughly. Ever since the show turned 40, revivals have popped up all over the place, introducing new audiences to modern staging techniques that started back then, along with beautiful songs like “Aquarius,” “Easy to Be Hard,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Black Boys/White Boys.” Get on the train through Sunday, August 9, at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theater, 4720 North Scottsdale Road. Sunset Tours
Twilight is the time of day when the light is true, when those low-angled rays of filtered sunlight make everything come alive—especially ancient rock art, better known as petroglyphs. A special Sunset Tour at the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve is the optimal time to view the some 1,500 Native American artworks packed into a quarter-mile trail. Wildlife abounds as well: Quail, reptiles, hawks, javelinas and—if you’re lucky—bobcats can be viewed. Docents will explain the ancient culture behind the drawings, and what’s being done to preserve these treasures.

Martin Lawrence
Bad Boys is a terrible movie. The plot is absurd, like a bad episode of Miami Vice; the dialogue could’ve been written by a high school drama student. But it’s entertaining as hell. The same can be said for every movie Martin Lawrence has ever been in. Black Knight, Blue Streak, Wild Hogs, the three (three!) movies about Big Momma — all god-awful, all surprisingly fun. Only one thing can be inferred from this: Martin Lawrence is an entertaining man. We knew this, of course — his many appearances on Def Comedy Jam and his stand-up film Runteldat confirmed it long ago. His upcoming visit to the Valley will prove it once again.

Black Cat, White Cat
July has been extra-eclectic at FilmBar, thanks to its staffers hand-picking an array of seemingly random flicks they count as favorites to show throughout the month. How else could Jurassic Park, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and Black Cat, White Cat be shown as part of a series? The latter is a Serbian rom-com that follows a Romani huckster and comes to the indie cinema’s screen on Thursday, July 23.
