It’s hard to believe we’re already six months into 2016. If you’ve found yourself bogged down and wishing you’d have gotten out more or tried something new here in the desert, then you're in luck. June is a great month to get outside and get to know the desert. No punchline here, just five great events going on outdoors.

Bikes Direct Night Shredders
San Tan Mountain Regional Park
Wednesday, June 1
7 to 9 p.m.

If you're looking for a trail riding challenge, Bikes Direct Night Shredders offers an adrenaline-rushing night ride through the hills and bumps of the desert trails. With a strict code of “no rider left behind,” safety is at the forefront of this fast-paced adventure through the dark, shadowy desert at night. With that said, helmets are mandatory, and organizers ask that you also bring plenty of water, proper equipment to change a flat, and two sources of light, minimum 650 lumen.

Free Fishing Day
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Saturday, June 4
7 to 10 a.m.

No fishing license is necessary on Arizona Free Fishing Day. Additionally, the Arizona Game & Fish partnership will be providing all fishing supplies and a limited amount of bait. (So probably bring some of your own.) If you’ve wanted to try your hand at fishing, this is your day. Supplies are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have equipment, bring it with you. Tents, chairs, and snacks are also recommended to make this a most enjoyable experience.

Scorpion Night Hike
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Saturday, June 11
8 to 9 p.m.

Fun fact: There are more than 1,500 identified scorpion species. Does that question make you squirm? Well, whether you are super into scorpions or trying to squash (hypothetically speaking) your fear of the eight-legged arthropod, this short walk through the desert may be just what you’re looking for. If so, grab your flashlight and join McDowell Mountain Park staff for a guided search for scorpions in the Sonoran Desert darkness.

Full Moon Hike: Strawberry Moon
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Saturday, June 18
8 to 9:30 p.m.

Venture out for this guided two-mile night hike under the light of the full “strawberry moon.” Not only is this a great opportunity to experience the desert at night, but you'll also learn a little about why the month of June gets a “strawberry” full moon. If we’ve piqued your interest, then grab your hiking boots, a flashlight, and plenty of water before heading out on this desert adventure.

Life Along the Creek
Cave Creek Regional Park
Friday, June 24
7 to 10 a.m.

Join Cave Creek Park rangers for this 1.5-mile guided morning hike along the Cave Creek. Yes, there really is a Cave Creek with running water, plenty of really cool plants, and animals dwelling on its banks. Get an up-close glimpse of life along the creek with this moderate hike along the lower Dragonfly Trail, often considered the jewel of the creek preserve.
